Earlier in the year, one of our major clients, Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) had challenges of condensate on all their customer gas supply pipelines. Our expert services were engaged to #Pig and remove #condensate on their distribution pipelines in the Aba axis.
I was assigned team lead for the execution of this project. About 14 distribution lines were worked on, all 6 inches in diameter with a total of 54.9km and a liquid expectation of over 1500 barrels. These lines were scattered in different locations in Aba and we were given a one month shut down window by SNG to complete the project so as to enable them resume gas supply to their customers. Looking at the time frame given and the work needed to be done, we already knew there would be challenges but that did not deter us. Surely, we encountered enormous challenges such as unpiggable pipelines, inaccessible roads in some areas where the pipelines where located, working in confined space (Valve Pits) and managing the dense population inside Aba town where we carried out most of our operations.
With the indomitable spirit of "Get It Done", I was able to pilot the team to overcome all the hurdles that were before us. We had to come up with a technique (compressing the nitrogen gas, then release it at high pressure to blow off the condensate). We also applied long distance looping in locations that our vehicles and equipment couldn't reach because of inaccessible road issues and adopted a 2X5 (2 personnel to work for a 5 minute rotation) approach to work in the valve pits. We delivered a quality job within the scheduled time against all strong obstacles encountered and we were nicknamed "German Machine" by the SNG/SPDC project management team. This earned us a special commendation for the quality and timely job delivered from the MD of SNG.
